A CLASSIC COLLABORATION
Cloyd Haas, then owner of Haas-Jordan Company was president of Inverness Club, Toledo, Ohio in 1940. It was Haas who hired Byron Nelson to be the head golf professional at Inverness Club. Their friendship led to a new era in umbrella history.

In the early 1940’s, Nelson and Haas set out to create an improved golf umbrella that would meet the demanding needs of the touring pro -- one that would be larger than the European golf umbrella of the day -- large enough for two.

In 1942, their efforts led to Haas-Jordan’s introduction of the first American-style golf umbrella. It included such firsts as a double rib frame for better wind resistance and a new fabric woven so tightly that water droplets would be unable to pass between individual threads.

These features -- plus many, many more that have been added in the following years -- are found in our Hurricane 345 Wind Vented Custom Built Classic umbrella.

THE 103-YEAR HISTORY OF THE HAAS-JORDAN BRAND NAME

In February, 1899, the Haas-Jordan Company was founded as the Hull Brothers Umbrella Manufacturing Company in Norwalk, Ohio. The brothers moved their fledgling enterprise to Toledo in 1903. By 1910, they had built a new factory to house the growing business. By the 1920's, the Hull Brothers' company was among the ten leading umbrella manufacturers in the United States - quite a feat considering that they competed with 250 umbrella makers across the US. Their dominance was due in part to a patented design which let consumers easily interchange handles and ferrules - an early example of the innovative spirit that has guided Haas-Jordan throughout its first century.  The company's success was also enhanced by the efforts of an aggressive young salesman named Cloyd Haas. Haas had joined the firm at age 14 and moved into sales by his mid-twenties. In 1928, he purchased an ownership interest and the company was reorganized as Hull Brothers & Haas Umbrella Company. Under Haas' direction, the company continued to expand its share of the market for high quality fashion umbrellas sold in finer department stores. In 1932, Cloyd Haas approached William H. Jordan, the owner of a New York-based import-export firm, with a plan to combine their companies. This made excellent sense because Jordan's sole business was supplying high quality European-manufactured frames, handles and textiles to the American umbrella industry. The savvy Haas realized this merger would also provide him with a showroom in the Empire State Building, an address frequented by buyers from America's leading department stores.  In 1933, the two firms merged creating the Haas-Jordan Company. Haas managed the manufacturing and sales operation in Toledo while Jordan ran the New York sales office. The relationship proved invaluable to the company's survival during World War II, a period when more than 80% of American umbrella manufacturers ceased to exist, largely because of the wartime rationing of steel. During the war, Jordan's overseas connections ensured a steady supply of raw materials. In Toledo, the company's manufacturing capacity was partly converted to production of high quality garments for our armed forces. This kept the work force fully employed throughout the war.  It would not be unreasonable to say that Haas-Jordan has been responsible for almost every major advance in golf umbrella technology during the past 100 years. Haas-Jordan introduced the European style golf umbrella to America in 1933. In 1942, with the assistance of Byron Nelson, Haas-Jordan designed and built the first American style golf umbrella, a design which combines large size, dense fabric weave and a double rib frame for added strength. In 1959, Haas-Jordan was the first manufacturer to silk screen umbrellas. In 1961 Haas-Jordan introduced the first all fiberglass frame and fiberglass shaft.  Byron Nelson promoted the sale of Haas-Jordan products through appearances in local stores at each stop he made on the PGA Tour. In 1944, he was elected vice president of Haas-Jordan Company brand name. Today, the F. J. Westcott Company remains committed to the same innovation, impeccable quality, customer service, and outstanding value that the Haas-Jordan Company earned in over 60 years of service to the golf industry.
